In May, four St. Edward’s University undergraduate students participated in a 1-week research experience in the field of herpetology. The students were involved in every step of the scientific method from developing a question with methods to answer it, to data collection and analysis. They attempted to gain an understanding of the best methods for sampling reptile and amphibians within Wild Basin in hopes of creating a protocol for measuring diversity of herpetofauna in Wild Basin over time. What they found was reptiles and amphibians are generally more active at night and future efforts to sample diversity should consider confining their efforts between 6pm and midnight.
