Stewardship Spotlight: Darrell Hutchinson

Wild Basin

City of Austin field biologist Darrell Hutchinson has been conducting Golden-cheeked Warbler surveys at Wild Basin for the past five years as part of a broader population study in Travis County. Golden-cheeked Warblers are an endangered migratory species of bird that comes from Central America to the Austin area every spring to mate and nest. As part of the study, Darrell locates the warblers and places a unique color band combination on each individual so that they can be monitored over the long-term. Additionally, the nests of the warblers are also located so that Darrell can see how successfully the warblers are breeding. Analyses like this are essential to help understand and preserve the populations of Golden-cheeked Warblers who visit Texas every year.
