This week’s Stewardship Spotlight belongs to our awesome volunteer Dan Walsh! Dan has a long history with St. Edward’s University. He graduated from St. Edward’s in 1973 with a Bachelor in Business Administration and worked in the Facilities department for several years after graduating. His brother, Brother Stephen Walsh, was an influential person in the SEU community, serving as University President from 1972-1984. As a retired state employee, Dan found himself with a lot of extra time on his hands and decided to join us for a stewardship workshop. He has been volunteering weekly ever since.
What volunteer services does Dan Walsh do for the Wild Basin?
Dan comes to Wild Basin every Thursday, along with a team of dedicated volunteers, to preserve and maintain Wild Basin’s trails. Trail erosion occurs when water, wind, gravity, or foot traffic causes the soil particles to transfer from one area to another. In addition to maintaining trail tread, Dan also assists with pruning vegetation that may grow into the trail and obstruct hikers. He often helps with possible safety concerns, like exposed roots that could trip hikers, and maintains the natural aesthetic of the preserve. He also helps maintain visible trail boundaries so that hikers are encouraged to stay on designated trails and minimize damage to the preserve. Regular trail maintenance by Dan and other volunteers is needed to preserve Wild Basin’s trail system for recreational and research use.
What are some words of advice for others wanting to volunteer at the Wild Basin?
Walsh has some words of advice: If you have spare time and enjoy being outdoors, come volunteer. Wild Basin owns a calm, meditative atmosphere. All work done is appreciated by the Wild Basin and the visitors who enjoy the views of the natural preserved grounds. Come out to volunteer by yourself or with a group; come out every Thursday in the mornings.
